Your Den’s Pack Meeting Duties

Den Assignments for Pack Meeting

Monthly den reports based on den number. Odd-numbered dens report on odd-numbered months, and even-numbered dens report in even-numbered months. A den report is when the members of a den tell the pack what they’ve done as a den since their den’s last report. Although you’re not restricted to this format, den reports typically consist of all den members standing in front of the audience, and each member taking a turn telling the audience one thing they’ve done since their last report.

Rotating den responsibilities. To help pack meetings run smoothly, each month different dens are assigned different responsibilities at that month’s pack meeting. They include the following:

  1. Setup/clean-up
    1. Setup public announcement system (This is kept in the blue lockers in a rolling bag.)
    2. Setup tables (these are kept in the closet in the FUMC gym).
    3. Position flagpole bases (These are kept in the blue lockers.)
    4. Assemble flags, if they’ve been broken down into two parts for storage (make sure they’re the ones for Pack 442, and not the Troop)
    5. Setup chairs for audience (these are kept in the closet in the FUMC gym).
    6. Any other setup directed by a leader.
    7. Cleanup of all of the above.
    8. Ensure the facility is left in better condition than when we arrived.
  2. Gathering activity. The purpose of the gathering activity is to give the scouts something constructive to do while they’re waiting for the meeting to begin. The BSA publishes Pack Meeting Plans that include a suggested gathering activity. Although the Cubmaster may create a custom meeting plan different from these, the suggested gathering plan may still be appropriate. You are limited only by your creativity, and the BSA guiding principle of “keep it simple and make it fun.”
  3. Greeters. Dens responsible for the greeting should ensure every person is greeted with a warm, scout smile and open door. Greeters should know what the gathering activity is and direct scouts to it as they arrive. The den leader should be prepared to field questions from first-time attendees.
  4. Flag ceremony. Dens responsible for flag ceremonies are responsible for conducting the opening and closing flag ceremonies. This is one of the most visible and important parts of the pack meeting. Your den should practice for this important responsibility at the den meetings leading up to the pack meeting. This Flag Ceremony pdf explains the process.
  5. Opening. The den responsible for the opening should prepare an opening consistent with the month’s scouting theme. This will be presented shortly after the flag ceremony. The BSA publishes Pack Meeting Plans that include a suggested opening. Although the Cubmaster may create a custom meeting plan different from these, the suggested opening may still be appropriate. You are limited only by your creativity, and the BSA guiding principle of “keep it simple and make it fun.”
  6. Skit/song. The den with this responsibility should be prepared either to perform a skit for the audience, or to lead it in a fun song.
